The standard rate has a start date on the GOV.UK page. The reduced rate, zero rate, and the two thresholds are stated as current figures. That page does not give their start dates, so those dates are not invented here.
Worked example
Adding VAT to £100.00 at the standard rate gives £20.00 of VAT and £120.00 including VAT.
Removing VAT from £120.00 gives £100.00 excluding VAT and £20.00 of VAT.
How this calculation works
Adding VAT: net price × VAT rate = VAT. Net + VAT = total.
Removing VAT: gross ÷ (1 + VAT rate) = net. Gross − net = VAT. Removing VAT is not the same as taking 20% off the gross price.
Amounts are rounded to the nearest penny. VAT Notice 700 lets invoice totals be rounded down, and line amounts rounded in more than one consistent way. This tool is one amount, not an invoice.
Engine vat_v1.0.0. The rate used is the approved rule for the date of the calculation.
Current verified rates
Standard 20%. Reduced 5%. Zero 0%. Registration when taxable turnover goes over £90,000.00. A registered business can ask to cancel when taxable turnover falls below £88,000.00.
Zero-rated is not the same as exempt. Exempt supplies, such as many financial and property transactions, are outside these three rates. What you sell decides which rate applies.
VAT registration check
This follows the tests on GOV.UK. It is not a decision that you owe a particular amount of VAT.
